  • Interview post-course de Rick Hendrick (En anglais)

      THE MODERATOR:  We're joined now by the winning car owner, Mr. Rick Hendrick.  Mr. Hendrick, congratulations on a great victory today and even more so, all four of your teams advancing to the Contender Round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

     

                RICK HENDRICK:  Yeah, it was a great day.  Kasey made it a pretty long day.  We were watching the monitor there at the end of the race hoping that we didn't have a caution and Jeff could win it and Kasey could get in.  I didn't know exactly how close this thing was going to be until I watched the monitor, but it was a good day.  All our cars ran well.  Kasey had a really good car, but Jeff just did a fantastic job and was there all day, so good to get that win.

                Q.  Kasey at one point was running four laps down, and if a caution it come out at that point it probably would have ended his season.  What was your level of nervousness during the race watching him struggle, and did you feel at any point like maybe this was the end of the road for him?

                RICK HENDRICK:  Yeah, absolutely.  You know, his car was so good, he was up, I think, sixth or seventh, and we pitted and then he felt something, and it was a loose wheel.  The left rear was loose.  When he had to pit under green, I just thought we were done because -- just no way to make up -- didn't think we could make up two laps, and then we did a wave-around and it worked out.  And then I thought we were okay, and then we were like even or one point behind.  I really had written it off about two thirds of the race.  I thought we were just not going to get a break to get back in it.

                Q.  Kind of along those lines, were you watching more what was going on with Kasey than Jeff, and who do you feel like is kind of the bigger winner out of today?

                RICK HENDRICK:  Well, Kasey escaped a bullet, and it was like -- but Jeff got a win and I think made a statement, and he's been good everywhere.  So I think having Jeff win the race and carrying that momentum into the Chase as a real contender with four wins this year, I thought that was pretty special.  When you have four cars and you want them to make that round -- if Kasey had been a car that was just 20th or 21st and got lapped, it wouldn't have been as tough as it was for him to have one of the faster cars in the first segment and then get eliminated with a wheel, loose wheel. It was a roller coaster of emotions, but winning a race is special.  At least we now get to go to zero and take all four to Kansas.

                Q.  Rick, you mentioned, you kidded Jeff that he's discovered the Fountain of Youth.  What are the keys to his resurgence this season in your mind?

                RICK HENDRICK:  Well, I think Alan Gustafson is one of the smartest crew chiefs I think in the garage, but this new rule package, it's a little bit tighter race car.  I think it's helped the 5.  It's helped Dale and Jeff, and I think Jimmie and Kasey, it's gone a little bit the other way for them. As soon as we showed up with this package, Jeff has been solid.  Jimmie is getting closer and closer, but he'll admit he likes a loose race car, and this rules package is a tighter race car.  That's the difference. I think when Jeff Gordon can see 10 laps to go, I'll put money on him anywhere, and he's a smarter race car driver I think than he was when he was in his late 20s, and he uses his head and he's got all the talent in the world, and Alan has given him some super race cars.  Alan leaves nothing undone in every area of that team, and I think Jeff has really just stepped it up.  It's a combination of a lot of things, but I've never seen -- I can remember back when he was winning 10 or 12 races a year, he didn't get out of the car and jump on the roof and have as much fun in victory lane as he is right now.  He's really enjoying himself.

                Q.  Everybody has talked about the next three races with Kansas kind of having a lot of wrecks in recent years, then obviously Talladega.  How are you going to handle watching them?

                RICK HENDRICK:  You know, I might not watch Talladega.  I might go to the next two and let them tell me when it's over.  That one will be -- I think everybody that's in the next round is going to try to get as many points as they can before we go to Talladega because that's going to be a tough race. I think Charlotte and Kansas will be okay.  You'll probably have some problems but nothing like what we were facing going to Talladega.  Actually I think I'm getting inducted into the North Carolina Drag Racing Hall of Fame that Sunday anyway, so I'll let them tell me when it's over.

                Q.  A little bit off topic, but we recently celebrated 25 years since Tim Richmond passed away.  If you can pick out like one favorite memory of him, what would that be?

                RICK HENDRICK:  I think the one I'll never forget is Tim at Pocono.  He and Dale Earnhardt Sr. used to play with each other a lot, and he keyed the radio, and he said, hey, Rick, are you listening, and I said, yeah, and he said, watch this.  He goes into Turn 3 and he's leading the race, and he slides up the track, and Dale comes by him, and then he catches Dale about the flag stand and just lifts him up, his rear end off the ground, and I thought, man, you're messing with a snake. So many Tim Richmond stories, but that guy just had so much talent.  I've seen him make up laps at Pocono and would love to have seen him be around to see how many races and championships he could have won.

                Q.  Now that you've gone through the first round these three races, kind of seen how things have played out with this new format, how different is it from what it's been?  How do you guys have to handle things, because obviously with the reset now it doesn't matter what you did.  What's so different, and how are you having to adjust in how you plan and organize things with your group?

                RICK HENDRICK:  Well, you know, I think the plan has just got to be to go out and try to win.  Win and you're in, but if you can't win, you've got to accumulate as many points as you can, and you can't take a chance.  I mean, you can't do anything outrageous to try to win because you could put yourself in a box with the points. So I think we're just going to have to -- I know, especially with Talladega being a wild card, we're going to try to get as many points -- try to win the race; that's goal one, because win and you're in.  But then try to not take any chances if we're not winning to accumulate as many points as we can.  This is really a -- this whole scenario, you saw it today, with a car that was in good shape, running in the top six or eight, have a loose wheel.  If you have a speeding penalty, or like Kevin with a tire, if that had happened toward the end of the race, it can knock a great car out.  I predict there will be one of the top guys, one of ours, one of Penske's, one of somebody's, that will have a problem like that and it'll cost them a chance to move on.

                Q.  You just kind of touched on this.  I know it's just one race, but the fact that Jeff won today and won beating one of the Penske cars kind of on a heads-up battle towards the end of the race, does that bode well for the rest of the Chase do you think?

                RICK HENDRICK:  Yeah, I think so.  You know, we run really well at Charlotte and we run well at Kansas.  I think those two tracks we've won a lot of races, and our guys all run well there. I think today was good for us to see Jeff go out there and run them down.  You know, it seems like all year, the Penske cars are better on the short run, our cars are better on the long run, and you're going to have to make adjustments if there's a restart and it's a short run. You know, it's going to be a battle.  I think Kevin Harvick is -- he's seven poles, led a ton of laps.  If he doesn't have any problem, he's been good everywhere.  You know, it's going to be a real dogfight.

  • Gordon, Keselowski et Johnson intraitables à Dover

    AJ Allmendinger, le champion 2004 Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle et Aric Almirola ont raté leur ticket d'entrée pour le prochain round éliminatoire du nouveau chase, passant ainsi de 16 à 12pilotes.  

    Au début, la voiture la plus performante et la mieux réglée fût celle du Coors Light Polesitter, Kevin Harvick, qui a encore été frappé de malchance avec un problème majeur d'amortisseur avant gauche et de riffle au tour 254 de 400, Gordon prit ainsi le contrôle au tour 305, déposant Brad Keselowski pour le leadership. Après de nombreux ravitaillements sous drapeau vert, Gordon mena 71 tours repoussant Keselowski à une avance confortable de 4.352 seconds. Jimmie Johnson finira troisième, suivi de Joey Logano et Matt Kenseth, ces 5 pilotes avançant cash dans le Contender Round, un second segment de trois courses du chase, à l'issue également éliminatoire. Les épreuves seront Kansas Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway et Talladega Superspeedway, qui nous fait saliver d'ores et déja. Harvick (13th ), Kyle Busch (10th), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (17th), Ryan Newman (8th), Carl Edwards (11th) & Denny Hamlin (12th) avancent également au Contender Round.

     Les douze pilotes qualifiés vont débuter le chase portion Contender avec 3,000 points. Chaque chaser qui gagnera au Kansas, Charlotte ou Talladega sera qualifié automatiquement pour le tour suivant, le "Eliminator Round." Les Chasers passeront alors de 12 à 8 pilotes au soir de Talladega.

  • Allmendinger and Almirola Proving They Belong

    Yet, both are on the verge doing exactly that.

    Both drivers remain alive in the Chase, more than holding their own, with Allmendinger in great shape to advance the Contender Round, sitting 10th on the Chase Grid. The JTG Daugherty Racing driver controls his own playoff destiny in Sunday’s AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway (2 p.m. ET on ESPN), where he can advance with at least a second-place finish, regardless how his fellow competitors perform. There are plenty of other scenarios in which Allmendinger can clinch a spot in the next round, but a runner-up guarantees advancement.

    Almirola has some work to do, trailing Ryan Newman by 10 points for the final Contender Round spot. However, he would be close to a lock to advance after this weekend if his engine didn’t blow at Chicagoland where he was running sixth with 36 laps left before being forced to head to the garage. The No. 43 Nathan’s Famous Ford pilot finished sixth last week and has shown some speed lately with three top 10s in his last four races.

    Almirola can lock himself into the Contender Round with a win on Sunday, but he would need help from the field with any other finish.

     

  • "Johnson A Monster At Dover" - JJ est le monstre de Dover

    A la suite de plus d'un an de concertations avec les acteurs majeurs de l'industrie, avec les yeux tournés vers l'avenir, la NASCAR a finalisé, et délivré aux teams le package de règles 2015, et ce, pour les trois séries nationales (Sprint Cup; Nationwide, CWTS).

    "Ce nouveau règlement, ce package de règles représente beaucoup de travail pour la NASCAR, les écuries, les pilotes, nos partenaires manufacturiers, et Goodyear," explique Gene Stefanyshyn,  en NASCAR le vice-président senior des innovations et développements de systèmes liés à la compétition. "Le travail fourni, on le rappelle, est attentivement regardé lors de nos courses, et le boulot effectué a atteint son but. Un nouveau package de règles sportives et techniques ont pu être ainsi délivrées rapidement à l'ensemble des teams." 

    Les gros points majeurs en NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qui vont changer pour 2015 sont près de 60 améliorations, incluant des ajustements au système propulseur (Trains roulants), l'aérodynamique, et le châssis, ces trois dernières choses conçues de manière à fonctionner en symbiose entre elles , délivrant ainsi plus de flexibilité aux teams et pilotes. Plus d'ajustements possibles aussi. Les fans attendent cela, plus de "closer racing", plus d'opportunités de dépassements en piste. Nous avons eu une des plus belles saisons de course cette année, 2014," renchérit Stefanyshyn. "Nous rappelons que nous regardons à constamment faire évoluer notre industrie. Ceci ne s'arrêtera pas avec le package de règles 2015. Ces développements continueront dans les années à venir."

    La NASCAR va instituer un aileron AR plus court (de 20 à 15cm), une puissance en berne de 152 canassons, mais de 27 à 32 kilos en moins par voiture. Différents ratios et pièces sur les différentiels à glissement limité feront aussi leur apparition, et une track-bar ajustable par le pilote. 

    La NASCAR a aussi annoncé des qualifs en groupe pour le Daytona 500. Plus d'essais privés, qui ne seront donc, plus autorisés. Mais plus de testing avec Goodyear, ce qui pourrait compenser les difficultés en termes de développement. Notons d'ailleurs, et ce qui va être un peu dommage pour le spectacle, que les sessions dites "Practices" ne nous permettront plus de voir avec facilité qui a une bonne voiture ou pas, à l'instar de la F1. Des pneus pluie Good Year apparaitront sur les routiers, quoique l'on ne puisse pas dire qu'à Sonoma il pleuve beaucoup (On est plus proche d'un climat méditérranéen sec).

    "On est contents de ce "rules package" et de ce qu'il va apporter à notre sport" dira Steve O’Donnellvice president exécutif en charge de la NASCAR et officier en chef des développements liés aux opérations de course.

    Ces travaux, effectués -c'est une première- avec l'aide des industriels, équipes, pilotes, manufacturiers, Good Year, Chevy, Ford, Toyota, qui nous ont permis d'apporter de substantielles et efficaces nouveautés dans ce règlement 2015. (...) sont de très bonne augure pour les épreuves de 2015"

  • "La 8ème place de Busch à Loudon équivaut à une victoire"

Kyle Busch a terminé huitième au Sylvania 300 des NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, lors de la course de dimanche au New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Et il l'a fait avec une voiture qui aurait eu l'air plus à l'aise sur le dos d'une dépanneuse... Mais Kyle a souhaité son chemin de retour dans le garage... par ses propres moyens.

    Johnson, however, doesn't believe the performance gap between himself and the drivers who are in championship form is too great to overcome this season.

    With nine races to go, the reigning and six-time Sprint Cup champion is in a three-way tie with Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch for sixth in the 16-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup field.

    Johnson opened the Chase with an unspectacular 12th-place finish last weekend at Chicagoland Speedway, where Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon finished 1-2 to further cement their already legitimate claim as title favorites. Also in the top five were Joey Logano (fourth) and Kevin Harvick (fifth) -- two other drivers widely regarded as title threats.

    Not surprisingly, Johnson describes the current mood around the No. 48 shop as "not the best.""

  • Qui va remporter le Sylvania 300 ce week-end au New Hampshire?

    1) Brad Keselowski: Ce serait tentant de dire que Keselowski, qualifié pour le tour suivant, va lever un peu le pied. C'est une erreur. Keselowski a acquis les plus récents succés sur les pistes plates de 1 mile, telle celle du New Hampshire. Il est le meilleur, mathématiquement, sur ce genre de piste. Quand il n'est pas le meilleur, comme la semaine passé, il montre un pilotage affiné, et tout en ruse, pour aller chercher la victoire. En plus, il est, niveau psychique, dans une win attitude ou tout semble réussir. Le favori n°1, c'est lui. 

    2) Jimmie Johnson: Johnson peut mettre tout le monde d'accord sur un one-shot. Il peut se réveiller de la torpeur dans laquelle l'a plongé la course de dimanche et gagner au Sylvania 300. C'est vrai qu'il n'a plus gagné depuis juin. Et sur les 5 dernières courses, il signe 4 tops 10 (5 Tops 12 au final). Toujours faire attention à un sextuple champion de NSCS.

    3)Jeff Gordon: Gordon est le seul qui puisses contre-carrer Keselowski. Sauf la semaine dernière ou il finira second derrière l'intouchable Brad. Il est solide #2 au classement général chasers.     5)Kevin Harvick:  Harvick a mené 79 tours le week-end dernier lors du MyAFibStory.com 400 puis s'est "éteint" progressivement, pour décrocher une imméritée 5ème place, tant il pouvait prétendre à la victoire. Harvick n'a pas gagné depuis AVRIL, mais il est présent à chaque course, ce qui lui a valu une très bonne position dans le Chase. La Stewart-Haas Racing a récemment fait des essais à Loudon, ça peut lui donner un avantage.

    "NASCAR, Front Row Motorsports, Kyle Busch Motorsports and Martinsville Speedway announced today they will honor 2015 NASCAR Hall of Fame Inductee Wendell Scott, the first African-American driver to win a NASCAR premier series event, with a series of tributes during the Martinsville race weekend from Oct. 24-26.
     
    Front Row Motorsports will pay homage to Scott, also the first African-American driver to race full-time in NASCAR’s premier series, with a full throwback paint scheme on its No. 34 Ford driven by David Ragan, reminiscent of the blue No. 34 that he drove to Victory Lane for his first NASCAR premier series victory at Jacksonville Speedway on Dec. 1, 1963. Ragan is one of just three drivers to win in the No. 34, and the first since Scott.
     
    “It’s going to be cool to honor Wendell Scott at his home track with his family,” said Ragan. “I got to drive a tribute scheme for Ned Jarrett a while back, and it’s a tribute to the history of our sport that I get to honor Mr. Scott as an inductee, the last driver to win in the No. 34 before I did. I’m a fan of our sport’s history and have a real appreciation for it, so it’s special to be able to bring that paint scheme back for a weekend.”
     
    In addition, Kyle Busch Motorsports will change the number of Darrell Wallace Jr.’s truck from 54 to 34 in honor of Scott. A NASCAR Drive for Diversity graduate, Wallace became the first African-American to win a NASCAR national series race since Scott’s historic 1963 triumph when he captured the checkered flag in last season’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Kroger 200 at Martinsville.
     
    "It's an honor to run the No. 34 Toyota Tundra at Martinsville,” said Wallace. “I got my first win at Martinsville and the historical significance of that win and to be so close to Wendell Scott's hometown was a really cool bonus to getting my first win. The Scott family has followed my career since I ran the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program for Rev Racing and I've kept a relationship with the family over the years. Thanks to Joe Gibbs Racing, Kyle Busch Motorsports, Toyota and NASCAR for allowing me to run the No. 34 at Martinsville. I'm pumped to get back there and hope to get another victory."
     
    Adding to the celebration, Martinsville Speedway and the NHOF will host members of the Scott family during the race weekend and offer special Q&A opportunities for fans on-site.
     
    “Wendell Scott faced numerous adversities throughout his racing career. At the end of the day though, he persevered and overcame all odds,” said Clay Campbell, president of Martinsville Speedway. “That perseverance serves as an inspiration today and as a testament to that, he was inducted to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.”
     
    A trailblazer whose legacy extends to the present day, Scott was the 1959 NASCAR Virginia Sportsman champion and won over 100 races at local tracks prior to starting his NASCAR premier series career. The Danville, Virginia native served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II where he honed his skills in the motor pool. In 13 years of NASCAR premier series competition, Scott made 495 starts (35th on the all-time list), accumulating 20 top-five and 147 top-10 finishes. He passed away in 1990, at the age of 69.
     
    NASCAR currently awards scholarships in Scott’s name through the United Negro College Fund, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities and the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund. The Wendell Scott Trailblazer Award is awarded to a diverse or female driver in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series who has demonstrated significant contributions on and off the track. Current NASCAR D4D driver and last year’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Nevada state champion Jay Beasley was the 2013 award recipient.
     
    In addition, NASCAR has designated the first race weekend in March as a time to remember Wendell Scott’s legacy during a week that marks his first career start. Cars in all series run a decal in honor of his accomplishments within the sport.
     
    The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Goody’s ® Headache Relief Shot ® 500 will run Sunday, Oct. 26 at 1:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Kroger 200 will run Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1:30 p.m. on FOX Sports 1. Both races will also air on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, with additional coverage on NASCAR.com.
